Mermaid Facts

These mermaid facts are courtesy of mermaid and fellow mermaid blogger, sirenmerle. Check out her blog and read her amazing story right here
Here are some things you didn't know about mermaids:

We are not born mermaids. We become mermaids. Mermaids simply cannot give birth because they have no reproductive organs. In their human forms, however they can give birth. But the baby would be human and not mermaid.

Mermaids never age. The beauty of being a mermaid is that you will stay young forever. Although they do get older while human most eventually settle permanently into their fish forms.

Mermaid are not wicked. Sink ships? Drown sailors? That's a bunch of old wives' tales! Mermaids are actually very gently and friendly.

Mermaids are telepathic. While submerged it is difficult to speak. Mermaids are telepathic. They communicate with each other through thought, mostly in the form of images and occasionally words.

Mermaids live in groups. Many people view mermaids as solitary creature, but, not unlike humans, mermaids can get lonely too. They usually live together in large groups and are quite sociable.

Mermaids are exceptionally strong. It may not seem that way, but mermaids have the strength of 10 sharks. Mermaids are neither predator nor prey. They respect and are respected by all creatures of the sea.

Mermaids are vegetarians. So what do they eat? Mostly underwater vegetation.

Hope you learned something new about mermaids.

Swim Like A Mermaid

Obviously, if you're planning to become a mermaid you're going to have to be able to swim. There is no room for hydrophobia (fear of water) in a mermaid's life! It would also be helpful if you can do the mermaid kick, as this is the only way you will be able to keep afloat with a mermaid tail! If you can't do the mermaid kick, here's the video!

Your Mermaid Name

Most mermaids find their human name much too ordinary for the fantastical underwater life they lead, so here's how to generate your mermaid name!

If your first intial is:
R, S, T, U, V, or W then your mermaid name is Coral Moon

B, C, D, E, or F then your mermaid name is Marina Siren

G, H, I, J, or K then your mermaid name is Cleodora* Ocean

L, M, N, O, or P then your mermaid name is Pearl Blue

A, Q, X, Y, or Z then your mermaid name is Melusine** Aqua

**Daughter of a river god and a lover of Poseidon.

*A medieval tale tells of three sisters growing up on the Lost Isle of Avalon. The eldest, Cleodora, was cursed to spend one day a week as a mermaid.

Hope this was helpful. If you don't like your mermaid name here are two other generators which I really like. Click here or here to open the generators. Also, you can always create your own mermaid name. I recommend looking into mermaid mythology for some inspiration or maybe name yourself after a sea creature or seashell.  And if you want to find out what kind of mermaid you are, click here.

Sincerely,

Melusine Aqua

How To Make People Believe You're a Mermaid

Okay, so you're not a mermaid (yet). But others don't know that and there's no reason for all your fellow students not to believe that over the weekend you underwent a magical transformation from mere human to mythical being of the seas. Here's the How To:
1. Don't go for obvious mermaid makeup. There are a lot of mermaid makeup tutorials out there which tell you to use silver eye shadow and pink lipstick. These tutorials are for people who want to dress up as a mermaid for Halloween not for people who want to look like genuine mermaids. Stay tuned to the blog cause I'm gonna make a mermaid makeup tutorial soon!

2. Get the hair of a mermaid. Mermaids are known for their long luscious locks, so grow out your hair. If you can maintain it, you can never have to worry about cutting your hair again but if you would like to keep it practical grow out your hair to just below the shoulder. Before washing your hair, brush out all knots and after washing let it air dry and don't brush it unless you still have a huge knot. This leaves a nice texture and it looks like you've just been swimming!

3. Accessorize with (not necessarily real) pearls, shells, and starfishes. Wear them as jewellery, clip them into your hair, or braid a blue or green ribbon into your hair. Be creative!

4. Create fake scales on your legs. Put on a pair of old fishnet tights and dust some blue or green (if you use any other color it'll look like a weird skin infection) eye shadow on your ankles. Carefully take off the tights. Put on your pants, jeans, leggings, etc. and casually pull up the leg (careful not to smudge the eye shadow) exposing the scales. If you see anyone staring look down at your leg and hastily adjust the hem with an embarrassed or even alarmed expression.

5. A characteristic of mermaids is their voice. Speak calmly and softly but clearly. Also, sing when you're not speaking to people and pretend to think nobody is listening. If you really don't have any vocal talent substitute singing for humming.

6. Be distant and mysterious. Create obviously false excuses for not attending/swimming (at) pool parties. When someone questions why you're being so distant tell them you miss the ocean then quickly correct yourself or change the subject.

7. Drink frequently but in small amounts. This will make it seem like you're constantly thirsty but in reality you won't be drinking any more than anybody else.

8. Don't eat fish. If anyone asks why or offers you any tell them it's cannibalism then correct yourself.

Follow these steps and pretty soon everybody will be questioning if you're a mermaid!

Insouciant Spell

There are tons of spells and potions and rituals out there and I've done my share of research. But one spell that keeps popping up is the Insouciant spell. I've heard it's effective but I'm too scared to try it since it comes with a long list of unappealing side effects including nausea, fatigue, difficulty breathing, coughing fits, thirst (this one doesn't bother me that much since I drink 3 liters of water everyday anyway), mood swings, salt cravings, and headaches. If you're brave enough (or desperately want to become a mermaid) to attempt this spell here it is:
(say the spell ten times)
Insouciant inclemency
Redoubtable mediocracy
Refutable humanity
Make me what I wish to be
A mermaid
Witches* one, witches* all
Give this power to me

Pronunciation:
In-soo-see-ent   in-klem-en-see
Re-dow-ta-bull   mee-dee-o-kra-see
Re-few-ta-bull   hew-man-i-tee

Make me what I wish to be
A mermaid
Witches* one, witches* all
Give this power to me

Meaning of the Spell (this is a word for word translation so it might not make sense):
Carefree severe
Formidable ruled by mediocrity
Proven false humankind

Make me what I wish to be
A mermaid
Witches* one, witches* all
Give this power to me

*you don't have to be a witch for this spell to work

When reciting the spell some part of you has to be touching water otherwise something really bad will happen.
You have to be a believer for this spell to work.
You have to be wearing something that is special to you (earrings, bracelet, necklace) this will become your symbol. You have to wear your symbol while reciting the spell and you cannot take it off for more than 2 hours at a time for the rest of your life.
It takes a month to become a mermaid.
After casting the spell do not look at the moon. Apparently the moon will take control of you much like in h2o.
There are some good side effects too, like extended lung capacity and the ability to sing really well.
Not everyone is effected by side effects but this is a rare exception and you also may not have done the spell right. Some girls experience other strange side effects like " I was about to get out of the shower i felt like i was gonna fall".

Hope you don't go through too much discomfort and I hope it's all worth it in the end!
